FAQs

What does a medical translator do?

Medical translators are responsible for the translation of written patient information, pharmacological instructions, physician’s advice and diagnoses and healthcare brochures into a target language. Medical device translators focus specifically on the clinical and pharmaceutical devices used within the medical industry.

What is the difference between medical translation and medical interpretation?

A medical translator interprets written text, such as patient records, medical device information and clinical reports. Translators need to understand the source language and culture of the country where the text originated, before rendering that material clearly and accurately into the target language using a good library of dictionaries and reference materials.

A medical interpreter translates orally, for example an interpreter will be required in a scenario where a medical practitioner needs to relay information to a patient, but the patient does not speak the same language. An interpreter must be able to translate in both directions on the spot without using supplemental reference materials.
